One of the best ways to surprise a loved one on thier birthday is to wake them up at dawn with a bunch of friends singing happy birthday. Food, especially a birthday cake, should be brought by the group so that a small celebration can follow.

The idea sounds lovely, but make sure he/she is an early raiser, if not he/she might be very unhappy to get woken up early, especially on his/her birthday.
